Vilseck High School JROTC cadets celebrate their advancement to the Army JROTC National Academic Bowl Championship, set for June 20–24 at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. The team is among the top 1.7% of programs worldwide to qualify, marking Vilseck’s third appearance in four years.

The Vilseck High School Army JROTC Academic Bowl team is among the top 1.7% of teams worldwide advancing to the Army JROTC National Academic Bowl Championship, set to take place June 20–24 at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.

The annual competition, sponsored by the College Options Foundation, challenges Army JROTC programs globally through three levels of rigorous academic testing. All JROTC programs are required to field at least one team in Level I, held in November 2024. High-scoring teams advanced to Level II in February 2025, with only the best team from each brigade moving on to the national stage.

Vilseck’s team is one of just 32 Army JROTC academic teams to reach the championship round, placing them among the top academic performers from thousands of cadets who began the competition.

“This is an amazing accomplishment by itself,” said retired Maj. John Sabala, senior Army instructor at Vilseck High School. “But what makes it even more impressive is that this is the third time in four years Vilseck has reached the national championship—each time with a completely new team of cadets.”

In accordance with competition rules, cadets who compete at the national level are not eligible to return in future years, making repeat qualifications especially notable.

The Academic Bowl emphasizes leadership, teamwork, and scholastic achievement, reinforcing the core values of Army JROTC while providing cadets with a platform to shine academically on a national stage.
