During the week of April 25th, all enrolled world language students in Levels I-IV at Vilseck High School took the Avant STAMP (STAndards-based Measurement of Proficiency) assessment for the first time. The STAMP is an online computer-adaptive performance-based assessment of standards-based language learning across four language skills (Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking). The assessment results provide educators with information that helps teachers make decisions about the World Language Program, inform classroom instruction, monitor student progress, and establish when students have attained proficiency in a world language.
About two weeks prior to testing, Mr. Card, Ms. Ciaglia, and Mr. Ferreira exposed German and Spanish students to available practice tests provided by AVANT Assessment to help students become familiar with the testing format and cultural topics for the writing and presentational speaking sections. Once results are available, world language students will receive a personalized score report with graphics that captures their current level of proficiency attained in their language of study. Many students were highly motivated to do well on the STAMP as it is one of the official assessments used to award the prestigious Seal of Biliteracy starting in the 2025-2026 school year.
After the week-long assessment, students provided their teachers with feedback about their experiences; they highlighted areas where they felt confident and where they faced challenges and also insightfully suggested areas of improvement in their personal studies and in class activities. Overall, the students felt a great sense of accomplishment and were honest about their learning as one student stated, “I think by studying and paying attention in class and having a good teacher, it wasn't very hard.”
