Vilseck HS & Gymnasium Eschenbach Continue Cross-Cultural Book Club Collaboration
VILSECK, Germany – Vilseck High School students recently had the pleasure of hosting their counterparts from Gymnasium Eschenbach on April 21, 2026, as part of the ongoing American-German Book Club exchange program. This visit followed an earlier gathering on February 12, when Vilseck students traveled to Eschenbach to participate in a cross-cultural literary discussion.
During the April visit, students came together in the Vilseck High School Library to discuss their latest shared reading selection: a gripping murder mystery filled with twists and turns. Through thoughtful conversation, students explored deeper themes such as power, tradition, and justice, while also sharing personal insights and interpretations. The discussion allowed participants to see how readers from different cultural backgrounds can approach the same text in unique and meaningful ways.
In addition to the book discussion, visiting students from Gymnasium Eschenbach enjoyed a mini tour of Vilseck High School, offering them a glimpse into daily life at an American high school. The experience provided valuable opportunities for cultural exchange, strengthening connections and fostering mutual understanding among students.
The book club continues to demonstrate both academic and social benefits for participating students. Through collaborative discussions, students develop critical thinking skills, enhance their ability to analyze complex themes, and gain confidence in expressing their ideas. At the same time, the program nurtures communication skills, builds friendships across cultures, and encourages empathy by exposing students to diverse perspectives. Most importantly, it helps cultivate a lasting appreciation for reading as both an intellectual and enjoyable activity.
Students from both schools reflected positively on their experiences:
Vilseck High School students shared:
- “The book and our conversation were very educational! I learned to understand different points of view of various groups and what they struggle with!” — Sarah L.
- “I really enjoyed the group’s small group questions, because the wider prompted questions caused deeper conversations to spark between us, and I found it really easy to discuss the book even though I didn’t know most of the girls personally.” — Teagan M.
Gymnasium Eschenbach students added:
- “It was really interesting listening to each other’s ideas.”
- “It was lots of fun. I would like to do more stuff with the Americans.”
- “I would be happy to meet you all next year.”
These reflections highlight the joy and enthusiasm that the program inspires, reinforcing the value of reading as a shared experience that brings people together.
As the American-German Book Club continues to grow, both schools look forward to continuing this enriching collaboration in the fall. By blending literature, discussion, and cultural exchange, the program supports Vilseck High School’s mission to develop lifelong readers who appreciate reading not only as an academic skill, but also as a source of enjoyment, connection, and discovery.
