WIESBADEN, Germany – Students from Vilseck High School recently brought their talent to the 11th annual Dramafest in Wiesbaden. Under the evocative theme of "Parallel Lives," students Vic C., Sadie J., Mila M., Emma L., Kiyara P., Sel W., and Mark M. joined peers from across the continent for an experience centered on connection and artistic growth.

A Culture of Collaboration and Mentorship

The heart of Dramafest is its mission to provide a transformative, immersive environment that inspires creativity through active collaboration. Rather than working in isolation, our students partnered with both seasoned theatre professionals and their peers to sharpen their craft.

The festival functioned throughout the week as a hub of professional mentorship, giving students direct access to specialists in stage combat, musical theatre, improvisation, devised theatre, and more.

This professional guidance began with a trip to Frankfurt to witness a world-class musical in action. By observing professional performers, Vilseck’s young artists saw how the skills they practice in the classroom can translate into a career on the stage.

Mastery Through Specialized Workshops

The festival offered a rigorous schedule of workshops where students worked tirelessly to master specific disciplines. Every performance was tied to the "Parallel Lives" theme, creating a cohesive community of performers who challenged and supported one another.

Our students immersed themselves in a variety of specialized fields:

  • Original Works: Vic collaborated with a devised theatre group to write and perform an original play.
  • Scripted Mystery: Sadie and Mila showcased their acting chops in a high-stakes scripted murder mystery.
  • Musical & Movement: Emma and Kiyara brought energy to the stage, singing and dancing with the musical theatre troupe.
  • Quick Wit: Sel mastered the collaborative art of "Yes, and!" with the long-form improv troupe.
  • Action on Stage: Mark sharpened his stage combat skills, safely demonstrating swordplay and choreographed stunts.

Academic Excellence and Collective Success

Beyond the creative workshops, Dramafest is a demanding academic endeavor. Each student was required to perform a memorized monologue or duet from a published play they‘ve read in its entirety. They were adjudicated by experts on complex criteria, including vocal performance, characterization, and their understanding of subtext.

The results of this dedication were spectacular:

  • 100% Success Rate: Every single attending Vilseck student earned a Bronze Medal for their performance.
  • Trivia Champions: Demonstrating their collective knowledge, the Vilseck team took First Place in the theatre vocabulary breakout game.

Strengthening the Theatrical Community

Events like Dramafest do more than just showcase individual talent; they serve as a vital cornerstone for strengthening the theatrical community. By fostering a positive environment where students gain valuable experience from both professionals and their peers, the festival ensures that the next generation of artists is connected, capable, and inspired. Our students return to Vilseck not just as medalists, but as more confident collaborators ready to elevate the arts in our own community.
