Brit-Lit Students Explore Literary History in the United Kingdom
BATH, United Kingdom – During the weekend of March 21, Advanced Placement British Literature students from Vilseck High School traveled to the United Kingdom for an immersive literary experience rooted in the works—and worlds—of two of England’s most influential authors. For the second consecutive year, VHS students visited Bath, UK, bringing classic literature to life through history, place, and shared discovery.
The trip focused on the enduring legacies of Jane Austen and Mary Shelley, offering students meaningful, real‑world connections to texts studied in class. In Bath, students toured the Jane Austen Centre, where they learned about Austen’s life, the social influences behind her novels, and the customs of Regency‑era England. A guided walking tour of the city helped students better understand the town’s history and Austen’s place within it.
Students also visited Mary Shelley’s House of Frankenstein, an interactive museum dedicated to Frankenstein and to Shelley herself, widely regarded as the inventor of the science fiction genre. The visit deepened students’ understanding of how imagination, scientific curiosity, and historical context shaped one of literature’s most iconic works.
Experiences like this trip help students develop as readers by showing how words on the page both reflect and shape the world around us. By exploring key literary sites, connecting classroom learning to real places, and experiencing the city together, students gained a richer appreciation for British literature. This unforgettable trip continues to be a fun, meaningful, and educational highlight of the school year.
