Mr. Ritter’s AP Government class recently brought political advocacy to life with an Interest Group Convention! This hands-on activity gave students a chance to explore how interest groups influence government decisions.

What are interest groups?
Interest groups are organizations that represent specific causes or industries—like education, healthcare, or environmental protection. They often lobby elected officials, which means they try to persuade lawmakers to support policies that align with their group’s interests.

What did students do?
Each student represented a real-world interest group and shared its history, mission, and major accomplishments. Their goal? Convince the audience—made up of Vilseck High School students and staff—that their group deserved support.

To make things fun and interactive, audience members were given pretend money to “donate” to the interest group they found most compelling. This simulated how financial contributions can influence which causes gain momentum in the political process.

Why does this matter?
This activity connects directly to DoDEA Social Studies Standards, which emphasize understanding:

  • Civic Participation – How individuals and groups influence government.
  • Political Processes – The role of lobbying and advocacy in shaping policy.
  • Critical Thinking – Evaluating competing interests and making informed decisions.

By stepping into the shoes of interest groups, students learned how advocacy works in a democracy—and why it matters for citizens to stay informed and engaged.
